Garbage Do's and Don'ts
- Bag all household waste and put inside roll-out garbage cart.
- DO NOT put yard waste in roll-out garbage containers.
- DO NOT surround cart with garbage or put garbage on top of the container.
- DO NOT place carts or bulky/curbside items near trees, fences, under low hanging cables/wires, other obstructions or on steps, difficult inclines, landscaping or vehicles.
- DO NOT block carts or bulky/curbside items with vehicles
- Break down cardboard boxes and place at the curb for collection.
- The following WILL NOT BE COLLECTED: TV's, microwaves, electronics, construction debris (remodeling such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs or carpet), tires, paint, motor oil, batteries, car parts, rocks, concrete, bricks, or hazardous waste.
- Furniture, appliances and other items can be placed curbside for collection on the same day as regular garbage collection.
- Remove doors and all contents from refrigerators or freezers when placing out for pick-up.
How do I prepare yard waste for pick-up?
- All yard waste, other than limbs, must be bagged, bundled or tied.
- If using black bags, please leave the bag open so that the driver will see that it is yard waste, not household garbage because they cannot be taken to the same landfill.
- No bag or bundle should weigh more than 50 lbs.
- Tree limbs must be stacked loosely with cut end toward street.
- Waste Management will not collect any more than two pick-up truckloads of limbs per address per week.
Loose leaf collection?
- Loose leaf collection (vacuuming) is scheduled in the fall and on a separate schedule than your garbage collection (October - March)
- The City is broken out into 10 Zones for loose leaf collection.
- Loose leaf collecton is also advertised in local newspapers (Independent Tribune & Salisbury Post).
Missed garbage collections
- Report missed garbage collections within 24-hours to Public Works at 704-920-4200.
- Waste Management is not responsible for rescheduling missed collections if more than 24-hours elapse without reporting missed.
Placement of roll-out garbage containers
- Place containers at curb or edge of the abutting street prior to 7:00 a.m. on the regularly scheduled pick-up day but no earlier than 24-hours prior to that time.
- Containers shall be removed from the street and stored behind the dwelling unit no later than 11:00 p.m. on the day following the regularly scheduled pick-up day (from Sec. 7-52 of the City Ordinance).
Roll-out garbage container facts
All roll-out garbage carts are property of the City of Kannapolis.

The City provides one container per household. If you would like a second container, please contact the Customer Service Center at 704-920-4399.
DO NOT BORROW CARTS FROM VACANT HOMES.
The serial number stamped on the front of new carts is rcorded and matched with each address. Resident should also record this number in case your cart is stolen or damaged.
What is considered yard waste and how do I put it at the curb?
The following items are considered yard waste: leaves, grass clippings, pampas grass, garden debris (shake off as much dirt as possible), cornstalks, bamboo and other plant or garden material, branches and limbs, etc. Guidelines: All yard waste, other than limbs, must be bagged, bundled or tied. No bag or bundle should weigh more than 50 lbs. Tree limbs must be stacked loosely with cut end toward street. Waste Management won't collect any more than two pick-up truckloads of limbs per address per week.

What items will Waste Management not pick-up?
Waste Management will not pick up the following:
- Construction and demolition debris (windows, flooring, drywall, plywood, sinks, commodes, other items from major home improvements)
- Televisions (TV's)*, computers*, electronics*, microwaves*
- Paint*, batteries*, oil, propane cylinders*, tires or car/truck parts
- Infectious waste (check with local landfills for disposal information)
- Logs, firewood, stumps, root balls, debris from major tree removal or land clearing.

When is yard waste collected?
- Yard waste is normally collected the same day as your regularly scheduled household waste is picked up.
- However, during the loose leaf collection schedule (October-March), it is picked up according to your Zone.

Who do I call to have a dead animal removed from a roadway?
